Title

Correspondence, ca. 1586-1798

Scope and Contents

In 449 registers and volumes. Correspondence of the Grand Master of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem with ambassadors, priors and other members of the Order in Europe, European sovereigns, and the papacy. Records include correspondence between the procurators of the Treasury (procuratori del Tesoro) of the Order and the Order's receivers (ricevitori) in Europe, which once belonged to the archive of the Treasury (Archives of the Order of Malta Series 6 at the National Library of Malta). Related documents also in AOM series 1 at the National Library of Malta.

Historical Note

Documents preserved by the Chancery of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta and issued and received by the Grand Masters. As the sovereign of the archipelago and the head of the Order, the Grand Master was periodically informed about diplomatic and political matters from ambassadors, both Extraordinary and Ordinary, chargé d'affaires, agents, consuls, and secretaries or regents of the embassies of the Order, mainly located in Rome, Naples, Paris, Madrid, and Vienna. Ordinary ambassadors served for three years, which could be renewed; ambassadors were required to send an inventory of their documents to the Convent at the end of their mandate. The Grand Master maintained diplomatic relationships with European sovereigns and the Holy See. Center-periphery communications also occurred between the procurators of the Treasury, priors, and the receivers who were in charge of administering the local financial offices (ricette) linked to the different priories (priorati) in Europe.
