Description |
Woodcut depicting Christ kneeling in the Garden of Gethsemane. Nearby Christ's disciples lie sleeping as Judas leads the soldiers through the gate of a picket fence. Text in the lower margin reads, “De Passione Domini Jesu Christi Sermo Chorda Septima.” The woodcut border, printed from four blocks, depicts nude children or putti climbing among vines. The central woodcut was designed by the Monogrammist I.S. with the Shovel; Graf was the designer for the border. The monogram IS at the lower left of the image is contained in a shovel, a reference to the artist's teacher Hans Schäufelein. From: Marco Vigerio della Rovere. Decachordum Christianum Julio II. Pont. Max. Dicatum (Hagenau: Koberger, 1517). |
