Description |
Woodcut depicting St. Adelard, from Leonhard Beck's series of saints connected with the House of Habsburg. Created and originally printed 1516-1518, reprinted in Vienna by F. X. Stöckl in 1799 (and erroneously attributed to Hans Burgkmair) as Images de saints et saintes issus de la famille de L'Empereur Maximilien I. St. Adelard, a Benedictine monk, is tonsured and dressed in monastic robes. He is shown distributing bread and fish to lepers and others, who surround him. Baskets of bread and fish lay at his feet. A coat of arms with the early Habsburg lion rampant hangs on a tree. Numbered "2" on the plate. |
