Description |
Engraving depicting the adoration of the shepherds. One of the shepherds holds a lantern before the swaddled Christ while others gather around the Holy Family. Captions in the lower margin appear in Greek, Latin, English, French, German and Dutch, to appeal to audiences in multiple languages. From the picture bible Figures de la Bible, a project including designs by Bernard Picart, Arnold Houbraken, and Gerard Hoet and engraved by 18 Amsterdam engravers. Figures de la Bible was originally published by Picart in Amsterdam (1720) and then by Pieter de Hondt in the Hague (1728). |
